Triggers During Eating Disorder Recovery

Triggers During Eating Disorder Recovery

One of the most significant challenges that you will face in recovery is learning how to handle triggers that may cause a relapse. Once you identify which strategies best help you cope through your recovery journey, you’ll be able to use them throughout your life when tough challenges arise.

Here of some examples of how you can self-soothe when you are feeling triggered in different situations:

Trigger: Seeing bodies, meal plans, or fitness content on social media

Alternate Action: Deactivate or delete your social media until you feel safe enough to return

Trigger: Negative body image talk from friends or family

Alternate Action: Politely excuse yourself from conversations surrounding body image, food, or any other topic that makes you feel uncomfortable or triggered. You are allowed to put your recovery first

Trigger: Seeing people exercising or talking about how hard they worked out

Alternate Action: Focus on yourself and remember that your body needs rest.

Trigger: Eating with a group of people

Alternate Action: Ignore what’s on other plates and tune into the conversation. Food is only one aspect of connecting with others.

Build a Support Network

If your triggers continue to affect your daily life despite your hard work and efforts at recovery, don't be afraid to seek further professional help. Recovering from an eating disorder is not a journey you should take alone. Consider reaching out to your therapist, support group, or trusted loved ones.

Practice Mindfulness Techniques

When anxiety peaks, taking a moment to stop and recenter yourself can work wonders. With time, incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can help you stay grounded and better equipped to move through triggers with ease.
